Learn About Public Events at the 2010 Aspen Ideas Festival

We all get excited about great ideas, especially when we see them at work. While it is in our nature to think creatively; it is inspiration that propels us to act. What is really important now – in a time when so much needs to be re-worked, re-thought, resolved – is whether some of the great ideas we come up with can really come to life. This year at Aspen Ideas Festival we are posing a number of questions: Can we design for sustainability? Can we apply soft power to some of the more intractable problems we face in other cultures? Could the Constitution “evolve” to reflect society’s changes in the 21st century? Can we see our way to the next economy? Will the US remain a dominant force for prosperity and democracy? Will we turn the corner on education? Could we change the situation for desperately impoverished, abused, or undereducated girls and women across the globe?

Join us to listen, discuss, connect, and act. Through the week of this event, we welcome as many members of the public as our generous host venues can accommodate. We look forward to conversations that spill out onto the streets of Aspen, the communities of the Roaring Fork Valley, and, with the help of the world wide web, to audiences everywhere.

Festival focus on women and girls: Why?

What's so important about half of the world's population? Consider some realities:
What do women contribute to corporate financial performance? On average, Fortune 500 companies with more women on their boards of directors turned in better financial performances than those with fewer women. (Ernst & Young, "Groundbreakers: Using the Strength of Women to Rebuild the World Economy," 2009.)
What happens when women are employed in the third world? When women and girls earn income, they reinvest 90 percent of it into their families, as compared with only 30 to 40 percent for a man. (Phil Borges, Women Empowered: Inspiring Change in the Emerging World, 2007.)
What happens when girls receive an education? A one-percentage-point (ppt) increase in female education raises the average level of GDP by 0.37 ppt and raises annual GDP growth rates by 0.2 ppt on average. (United Nations, "Investing in Women and Girls," 2008.) Despite steady progress, two-thirds of the 759 million adults lacking literacy skills today are women. (UNESCO, "Education for all," 2010.)
What happens when women across the globe have little to no access to health resources? Each year, half a million mothers lose their lives in the process of giving birth. Millions more suffer complications that produce lifelong disability. (USAID, "USAID Global Health: Improving Global Health Improves the World," October 2009.)

Announcing a new opportunity to engage college students!: We are going to test this summer a new opportunity for parents and their college-age students to attend Ideas Festival together. Parents purchasing a pass to Session One or Session Two may also purchase a discounted pass for a child aged 18 – 22. Why? We think it might be fun to engage with each other around interesting topics. We are also confident that young people will not only derive a lot of benefit and interest from the speakers and presentations here, but will also add a tremendous amount to the quality of discussion across campus. Based on demand, we will also attempt to bring parents and students together in a series of conversations dedicated to them.

Throughout the history of the Aspen Ideas Festival, we've tackled challenging topics in international affairs, putting tough questions to world leaders and the people who know them best. As in years past, a weeklong track on global issues will be part of the 2010 Aspen Ideas Festival (see the 2010 tracks). Two highlights from the 2009 Ideas Festival:

Iran expert Karim Sadjadpour discusses dealing with Iran as a potential nuclear power and examines some strategies for addressing the threat. Earlier in the festival, New York Times columnist Thomas L. Friedman sat down with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad to learn about his plans for leading his nation through a turbulent time in the middle east.

Tracks have been announced for the 2010 Aspen Ideas Festival. One will be an expanded discussion of life online -- from media and blogging to the changing ways Americans need information in their lives. A highlight from the 2009 conference was a session which included Jason Calacanis who founded Weblogs Inc, Nick Denton of Gawker Media and Jeff Jarvis of Buzzmachine.com. Watch it.

Veteran blogger Andrew Sullivan also spoke at the 2009 Ideas Festival, talking frankly about why he blogs. The answer kicked off a rich conversation.

An ideas festival at a precarious moment...

Aspen is emerging as the American Davos... absent the stultifying earnestness of the Alpine gabfest. While sometimes you look around a room (or a big tent) and it seems like all the people speaking are people you know from Washington continuing a conversation they were having hours before in the breakfast restaurant at the Hay Adams Hotel, the crowd is smart, unafraid to ask tough questions and the overall air really does seem to involve the search for ideas.
“The idea that the US will be dominant in all fields of science and technology is not something we can aspire to any longer.” —John Hennessy

“We need to invest in community colleges. Not everybody belongs in a four-year school. Not everybody belongs in a research university.” —John Hennessy

“I think a lot about how people live who aren’t like me, and that’s the fundamental thought of a novelist.”—Curtis Sittenfeld

“When you watch cable news shows, you don’t need the voice and the message of the Republican Party to come from some ticked off guy.” —Tim Pawlenty

“Virtually every art form is decreasing—except the musical.”—Dana Gioia

“Along with jazz, the martini, and the airplane, the musical is a classic American art form.”—David Ives

“I’m a big believer in story. I believe in a beginning, a middle, and an end.”—Michael Eisner

“I didn’t want to design rich guys’ houses—I thought.” —Frank Gehry

“I was fascinated with raw buildings, fascinated with Rauschenberg, Judd, Andre, with people who were making art—high art—with junk. … I called it ‘Cheapskate Architecture.’” —Frank Gehry

“I knew how musicians felt about concert halls. I knew how conductors felt about concert halls. I knew they could walk in and read it aurally. … They can’t grow as an orchestra unless they can hear each other. … They have to feel good on stage. …The musicians hear better, they play better if they like the room; the audience responds better, the orchestra plays better, they feel better. You have to make a nice room. Forget the exterior, you have to start with the interior.” —Frank Gehry

“Psychologically, people feel better in a concert hall when there’s wood—because of the violins, the cellos.” —Frank Gehry

“There’s a box and, on either side of the box, there’s toilets and stairs. That’s the plan.” —Frank Gehry

“I wanted to use stone because you go to a concert hall at night, and, at night, stone is ambient and warm.” —Frank Gehry

“I don’t go into the yearning. I take things as they come to me. And that’s a better way to be.” —Frank Gehry

“I respond to the client intuitively. And that must be scary and a little mysterious from the other side. … But if they can get over that and play with it, it can be fun.” —Frank Gehry

Aspen Bulletin: Austan Goolsbee Explains It All

I haven't gotten to attend many panels this year, because I've been on too many. But of the ones I have gone to, the Austan Goolsbee Q&A is by far the liveliest. People who attend Aspen are very successful, and the questions he's being asked hit close to home for them: marginal income tax rates, taxation of worldwide corporate profits, H1B visas for foreign graduate students educated in America. Read complete article in The Atlantic.

Talking with Google's CEO About the Post-Industrial Era

t the Aspen Ideas Festival, I got up to a mic to ask Eric Schmidt a question. No, it wasn’t, “what would Google do?” I wanted his reaction to a notion I’ve talked about here that has crystallized since I wrote the book: that we are going through something more than a financial crisis and more profound and permanent than a recession. We are shifting from the industrial era – and the age of mass production, distribution, marketing, and media – to what follows, a society built on knowledge and abundance. We are seeing the collapse of the auto, banking, and newspaper industries and large swaths of the the rest of media, retail, real estate, and others to follow. We’re not going to go back; the change is bigger and more fundamental than that. “Did I go too far?” I asked. Read complete article on seekingalpha.com.

Quotes and Highlights from the Aspen Ideas Festival: Day Two

“We’ve got a problem now that has nothing to do with race or class or gender. It’s these tweeting, blogging, ‘I’m gonna do my own research’ jurors!”—Charles Ogletree

“It is important that we go beyond the justice that is executed … and be an advocate for the victim and a soft place for them to fall.”—TD Jakes

“There are a lot of great things about the justice system. But the list of bad things is longer.”—Charles Ogletree

“Not everyone who commits a crime using drugs—or even selling drugs—needs to be punished for life.”—Charles Ogletree

“We’ve started the Texas Offenders Reentry Initiative, because people can’t get a job, can’t rent an apartment, in many states they can’t vote, they have no options—and yet we say he has paid his debt to society.”—TD Jakes

“I’d like to see a jurisdiction, which pays both for public prosecutors and pays the bill for public defenders—have those people change roles every few years!”—Sandra Day O'Connor

“Get the mayors involved with the public-corrections officials six months before a prisoner is released. … Its not them and us. It’s our community. Like it or not they’re coming back!”—Charles Ogletree

“We need to have mandatory HIV testing before prisoners are released. … They don’t know if they are positive when they leave prison, and they are shooting people with a gun every time they have sex.”—TD Jakes

“Punish the serious gang members, but those who are not in that category should be rehabilitated in a meaningful way. … Recognize the difference between gang-bangers and a kid.”—Charles Ogletree

On More and More Women in Prison:
“Women can do all kinds of things, and I think they can commit crimes too. And if they do, I guess its good they get caught!”—Sandra Day O'Connor

"Every body should be tested for HIV and AIDs. Why? Because it eliminates the stigma if everyone has to do it. The more we make this a routine medical check up, the better.”—Charles Ogletree

“Ive been thinking about the great media crack up. ... And the idea that works is public broadcasting. … And the idea that doesn’t work is public broadcasting. ...
